The Self, Individuation, Communitas
Reflections on Fundamental Values in Analytical Psychology, an IAAP Conference in Strasbourg, France
Why a conference dedicated to the Values in Analytical Psychology?
The IAAP started in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1955 as an Association made up of a few representatives from Western Europe and North America.
Since then and due to globalisation in the last decades, its membership now extends across many countries of the world on six continents.
In recent years, the awareness of cultural differences in the membership has increased dramatically, and this has now made it necessary for us, as an international organisation, to reflect on updating, revising, and communicating the fundamental values of Analytical Psychology that unite us.
This conference sponsored by the IAAP is meant to share and extend the reflections and work carried out by the Fundamental Values Working party.
The focus of this conference
The object of this conference is to reflect together on the Self, Individuation, and Communitas, not by referencing these terms as abstract concepts but as the source of Fundamental Values in Analytical Psychology and Jungian Psychoanalysis.
Through reflection and dialogue among speakers and participants from a diversity of cultures, the intention is to initiate an ongoing elaboration of the values that address the question: What does Analytical Psychology stand for in the world today?
This will be an exercise in critical feeling. By employing the feeling function, we will speak from the heart about values that can guide the teaching and practice of Analytical Psychology worldwide in our time and for the future.
We welcome you to join us in this challenging endeavor.
The choice of Strasbourg to hold this conference
Strasbourg is a border city which suffered immensely from the hostilities between France and Germany; indeed, its population changed nationality five times in 75 years between 1870 and 1945.
In the aftermath of the Second World War, in 1949, Strasbourg became the symbol of Franco-German reconciliation and hosted the headquarters of the Council of Europe.
Ten years later, the city was also chosen to host a unique international entity, the European Court of Human Rights, whose object is to monitor respect for the human rights of 700 million Europeans in 46 memberstates.
Thereafter, Strasbourg gradually housed an increasing number of European Institution bodies (such as the European Parliament) and headquarters of international organizations and associations. Strasbourg is dedicated to promote values of peace, democracy, human rights and dialogue between people. Events and festivals are regularly organized in partnership with the European Institutions to promote the defense of those values and of European unity. In that sense, holding the IAAP conference in Strasbourg is most meaningful.
Strasbourg can easily be reached from large international airports such as: Frankfurt (regular Lufthansa coach shuttles), Paris (regular high speed train shuttles from Roissy airport), Amsterdam (regular flights to Strasbourg airport), Basel-Mulhouse (trains from Mulhouse), The Karlsruhe-Baden airport is close from Strasbourg and offers low-costs flights to a number of European cities.
After Paris, Strasbourg has the second largest railway station in France, offering a wide range of train connections with other parts of the country, as well as with Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and other European countries.
Strasbourg is connected to Paris by a high-speed train to Paris (1 hour and 40 minutes).
Situated in the heart of the UNESCO heritage district, the Sofitel is located at an easy walking distance to all the city’s main attractions: the Cathedral, the historic district of Petite France, the Opéra national du Rhin, the various museums, a great choice of restaurants…
The Sofitel has a gourmet restaurant, as well as a bar lounge with a terrasse.

The IAAP Concert and welcome 'Apero'
On the evening before the first day of the conference, a private concert will be offered by the IAAP to all the participants, in the historic church of Saint Pierre le Jeune located next to the venue hotel.
Originally, a monastery was founded on this site in the 6th century. In the 11th century, the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and became Lutheran in the 16th century. It is decorated with amazing frescoes from this period. The concert will be followed by a ‘welcome aperitif ‘ in the adjacent cloister.
